The University of Chicago Booth School of Business has named Starr Marcello, AM ’04, MBA ’17, deputy dean for MBA Programs, effective July 1, 2020. Marcello is currently the deputy head and executive director of the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago, and adjunct associate professor of entrepreneurship at Chicago Booth. She succeeds Stacey Kole, AM ’86, PhD ’92 (Economics), clinical professor of economics.

Marcello has been with the Polsky Center since 2005, helping University of Chicago students, faculty, staff, and community members launch the next generation of high-impact ventures.  For the past 15 years, she has escalated the stature and scale of many of the school’s premier programs, including the nationally recognized New Venture Challenge. The NVC now offers student entrepreneurs $1 million–plus in startup funding, and has successfully launched more than 300 companies, including Grubhub (NYSE: GRUB), Braintree/Venmo (acquired by eBay’s PayPal for $800 million), and Simple Mills. In her current roles, Marcello has continually introduced new resources to support student founders and those pursuing careers as VC and private equity investors.

“Starr is an integral member of the Booth community, and her leadership skills and innovative thinking have brought international attention to many of the university’s programs. I look forward to working with Starr in her next role, and seeing the new contributions she will make as deputy dean,” said Chicago Booth Dean Madhav Rajan. “Additionally, I am grateful for Stacey’s outstanding work during her 16-year tenure as deputy dean, and am delighted that she will continue serving on the faculty.”

In her new position, Marcello will be responsible for the MBA Program teams of Admissions, Student Life, Career Services, Corporate Relations, and Leadership Development. She will also oversee the Polsky Center and the Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation.

Marcello sits on the Board of 1871, the city of Chicago’s hub for technology and entrepreneurship, and is the board chair for UChicago Impact, which empowers K-12 educators to measure and improve student outcomes. She is passionate about advancing diversity in entrepreneurship, and is a frequent speaker on this topic. She holds a BA from Wesleyan University and both an MA and MBA from the University of Chicago.
